Layers of aragonite, known as nacre, build up around the irritant and eventually form a solid pearl. The iridescent Mother of Pearl is the layer that surrounds the solid pearl as the nacre continues to secrete in the shell.
Mother of Pearl is thought to attract prosperity and is used to heighten intuition, psychic sensitivity, and imagination. It is helpful for high blood pressure, dizziness, improving vision, cataracts, and wound healing.
